Welcome to THE FRIDAY SIX: Q&As with your favorite Broadway stars. Want to know what hooked them to a career in the theater? Their dream roles? Their Broadway crushes? Read on!
In this week's edition, we caught up with Nick Spangler, who stars as 'Greg Madison' in It Shouda Been You, currently playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
What is the first Broadway show you ever saw?
The first Broadway show I ever saw was Titanic in 1997. My family took a cross-country road trip and listened to the cast album the whole way to New York from California. Seeing Brian d'Arcy James sing 'Barrett's Song' was pretty life-changing for me as a 12-year-old. And it still blows my mind that I've had the pleasure of working with four of the show's original cast members in the past few years!
What is your most unique pre-show ritual?Taking my street clothes off and then only putting on shoes, socks, and boxers... because that's how I make my first entrance in It Shoulda Been You..
I was doing a show called Avenue X in Atlanta and there was a lot of stage combat in the show. During our FIRST PREVIEW I swung too high at my friend Jeremy's head and connected with his left temple. I broke a knuckle and he had a fist-sized bruise on the side of his head. But we both finished the show, with Jeremy literally singing his A CAPPELLA SOLO immediately after being punched. We spent 4 hours in the emergency room that night, and I spent the rest of the run in a hand cast.
What is the one role you want to play before you die?
I'll never die. But a good run as Billy Bigelow would be nice at some point.
Who is your Broadway crush?Always has been and always will be Kerry Butler. Seeing Hairspray in previews was one of the best nights of my teen life.
