Welcome to THE FRIDAY SIX: Q&As with your favorite Broadway stars. Want to know what hooked them to a career in the theater? Their dream roles? Their Broadway crushes? Read on!
In this week's edition, we caught up with Karen Pittman, who most recently starred on Broadway in Disgraced, which recently closed at the Lyceum Theatre.
What is the first Broadway show you ever saw?
"Frankie and Johnny" with Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci. It was the most delicate finely executed acting I had seen -ever- and I was so moved that I bought a signed poster and shook Edie Falco's hand on the backstage steps of the Belasco. It was magical and familiar and filled me with questions - just what a good night at the theatre was supposed to do. Six years later, I would walk through those doors as a cover in the musical "Passing Strange" and have my Broadway debut. It was surreal.
What is your most unique pre-show ritual?Leaping squats in my Manolos backstage of "Disgraced." (Hari Dhillon was always so impressed.)
I mean, besides the endless choking on stage moments from eating the fennel salad?! My most memorable show must go on moment was a wardrobe malfunction at the top of my entrance in the dinner scene of Disgraced. The zipper broke! And I had to keep my coat on until Gretchen and I went to the kitchen to set the table. The dressers gave me a new, but totally different dress and I quickly changed into it, put my coat back on, casually went out to hang it in the closet and set the table with Emily. The audience was none the wiser and apparently, Josh couldn't tell the difference. Once the show was over, we took our bows and walked up the stairs to the dressing room, and Josh says "Wait, is that a different dress?"
The role I would love to play is Bess from the opera "Porgy and Bess," which of course is not a Broadway role, but I studied opera at Northwestern and fell in love with the score. Bess is a beautiful and lovely woman. I'd love to encounter her in my spirit. I'm a big opera fan.
Who is your Broadway crush?I have a total crush on Jeff Goldblum. I mean- but who doesn't? He's lovely.
