Welcome to THE FRIDAY SIX: Q&As with your favorite Broadway stars. Want to know what hooked them to a career in the theater? Their dream roles? Their Broadway crushes? Read on!
In this week's edition, we caught up with Brian Gonzales, who is starring as 'Babkak' in Aladdin- currently playing at the New Amsterdam Theatre.
What is the first Broadway show you ever saw?
Actually, it was a Burt Bacharach review called THE LOOK OF LOVE directed by Ann Reinking. Very interesting show with new arrangements and mash-ups of his songs. I had a ball.
What is your most unique pre-show ritual?
I don't know how unique this is, but I like to listen to a 70s or 80s oldie. Makes me happy.
What is your most memorable "the show must go on" moment?
My wife Ashley and I were on tour with a children's show called ISLAND OF THE SKOG. We played mice shipwrecked on an island. One matinee, our leading lady got sick and just left the stage. There were no understudies on this one. So, Ashley and I rewrote the show as we went along and we all picked up dialogue that we knew moved the story forward. I thought we did pretty good, although in all of our quick thinking we forgot to mention what might have happened to the lead character who suddenly disappeared. Oh well.
What is the one role you want to play before you die?
Dr. Dysart in EQUUS. I've always been fascinated with that play, and his character.
Who is your Broadway crush?
Don't really have one. Sorry.
Where can people 'stalk' you online?
Outside of anything that appears on the "Aladdin" or Broadway news websites, that's about it. I tend to be fairly private.
