Five years ago, Tony Award winner Idina Menzel made her long-awaited return to Broadway, teaming up with her Rent director Michael Grief for Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey's original musical If/Then! To celebrate the occasion, we're throwing it back to the show's opening night at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Check out all the footage below!
IF/THEN began previews on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 and officially opened on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre (226 West 46th Street). The production played a pre-Broadway, out-of-town engagement at Washington D.C.'s National Theatre in the fall of 2013. The show played its final Broadway performance on Sunday, March 22 after 29 previews and 401 performances.
"Working on If/Then over the past several years has been one of the most professionally satisfying and personally fulfilling experiences of my career," said producer David Stone. "I am extremely proud of this musical, the entire creative team and cast and the remarkable work they have done in bringing this story to life. We all look forward to sharing it with audiences for the next ten weeks"
IF/THEN is a contemporary new musical that follows two distinct storylines in the life of Elizabeth, a city planner who moves back to New York to restart her life in this city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with the whims of fate, Elizabeth's life splits into two parallel paths. If/Then follows both stories simultaneously as this modern woman faces the intersection of choice and chance.
In addition to Ms. Menzel, the company of If/Then featured LaChanze (Tony Award-winner for The Color Purple), Anthony Rapp (original cast of Rent), James Snyder (Cry-Baby), Jerry Dixon (tick, tick...Boom!, Once On This Island), Jenn Colella (Chaplin, High Fidelity), Jason Tam (A Chorus Line, Lysistrata Jones), Tamika Lawrence (Matilda), and Jackie Burns (Wicked). The production also features Joe Cassidy, Miguel Cervantes, Curtis Holbrook, Tyler McGee, Ryann Redmond, Joe Aaron Reid, Gabrielle Ruiz, Ann Sanders, Marc De La Cruz, Charles Hagerty, Janet Krupin and Pearl Sun.
