Tamburlaine the Great starring John Douglas Thompson, edited and directed by Olivier Award-winner Michael Boyd into one fast-moving three-hour event with choreography by Sam Pinkleton and music composed by Arthur Solari, extends its broadly-acclaimed run for an additional two weeks through January 4 at Theatre for a New Audience, Polonsky Shakespeare Center, 262 Ashland Place, Theatre for a New Audience Founding Artistic Director Jeffrey Horowitz announced. The original closing date was December 21.

A new block of tickets for the two-week extension goes on sale Friday, December 5.

The production has also been acclaimed by: The New York Review of Books: "In Tamburlaine the Great, Marlowe turns dramatic poetry into a species of stripped down verbal rock...It has often been hard to imagine how [its] power might be resurrected on a contemporary stage. With the indispensable presence of John Douglas Thompson, Theatre for a New Audience has managed just that at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center;" The New Yorker: "John Douglas Thompson is riveting. Nineteen very gifted actors play sixty characters in this inspired production;" The Village Voice: "Fast, furious, and funny;" Theatermania: "Fascinatingly modern;" New Jersey Newsroom: "A truly memorable experience."

Theatre for a New Audience's production of Christopher Marlowe's 1587 Tamburlaine the Great opened Sunday, November 16, and is the play's first major New York production since 1956 on Broadway.

Michael Boyd, who edited the two-part epic into one fast-moving three-hour event observes, "The more I work on Marlowe's great double-headed masterpiece, with John Douglas Thompson and this brilliant New York company of actors, the more we see how much Shakespeare learned and stole from him, and understand why."
