Swann Auction Galleries will offer a selection of Broadway drawings by caricaturist Al Hirschfeld during its sale of 20th Century Illustration on January 24. Among the Hirschfeld highlights is a signed and inscribed drawing of Fanny Brice Singing "Modernistic Moe," in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1936 (estimate: $3,000 - 4,000). This is one of the earliest Broadway illustrations.
The January 24 auction will also feature a large collection of works from the late author Maurice Sendak, including photographs, drawings, children's toys, inscriptions, and other ephemera.
Illustrations by Dr. Seuss, Beatrix Potter, Edward Gorey, Charles Schulz, Hilary Knight (Eloise), and Garth Williams (the Laura Ingalls Wilder novels, Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little), among others, will be available. In addition, illustrations from titles such as The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings can be found, plus a range of Disney material.
