Five-time Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman will be honored on Monday, October 10th at the 6th Annual Elan Awards. Presented by Geoffrey Doig-Marx, Bruce Robert Harris and Dance Spirit Magazine, the awards will take place at FIT's Haft Auditorium (227 W. 27th Street) at 7 PM. Harold Prince (who doesn't lack for Tonys himself) will present the award to Stroman.
Now in its 6th year, The Elan Awards is an event celebrating choreography by producing new works by selected choreographers. This star-studded, multi-media show will also feature several guest performances followed by a gala celebration at 9:30 PM.. Participants in this year's Elan Awards include: Prince, Boyd Gaines and the cast of Contact, Nina Buisson, Lauren Putty, Bradley Shelver, Danielle Genest, Caron Eule, Dee Caspary, Tracie Stanfield, Geoffrey Doig-Marx, Rebecca Kelly, Jeff Amsden, Graham Lustig and Rhonda Miller.Stroman, who began as a choreographer and is now an in-demand director as well, will make her big screen debut with the film version of The Producers; she won Tonys for direction and choreography for the smash Broadway production of the Mel Brooks musical. She also won Tonys for choreograping the hit musical theatre-dance piece Contact (which she also directed), the Prince revival of Show Boat and the Gershwin-scored musical Crazy For You. With five other Tony nominations under her belt, she has also choreographed the Trevor Nunn revival of Oklahoma!, Steel Pier and Big. She both helmed and created the dances for The Frogs, Thou Shalt Not and the 2000 revival of The Music Man.
Past recipients of The Elan Awards include: Lar Lubovitch (2004), Rob Marshall (2003), Ann Reinking (2002), Jerry Mitchell (2001) and Graciella Danielle (2000).
