Discover New York City's vibrant tango community with the broadcast debut of Surrender Tango, on Monday, July 12 at 9pm on NYC Life (channel 25). NYC life is the flagship station of NYC Media, the official network of the City of New York. In celebration of the documentary airing on NYC life, NYC Media will host a sweepstakes encouraging New Yorkers to enter to win a festival package at the 10th Annual Tango and Film Festival, part of Celebrate Tango Week, taking place July 19-25, or tango lessons from Dance Manhattan.

Shot entirely in the City at locations such as the South Street Seaport and Central Park, Surrender Tango is a film by two-time Emmy award winning independent documentary producer Marcia Rock and explores the intimacy of the dance form through interviews with social dancers, dance teachers and performers. The film culminates with an electric performance of Escualo by Mariela Franganillo and Jorge Torres.

This thirty-minute documentary goes beyond showcasing tango as a dance form, focuses on how partner-based dancing teaches its dancers about trust and relationships as well. Social dancers talk about how tango has affected their lives; dance teachers and performers convey the intricacies of the connection through interviews and demonstrations. All this is set to a pulsating soundtrack with music by Hector Del Curto's Eternal Trio.

According to Rock, Surrender Tango was the most "conceptual documentary" that she has ever produced. Viewers will follow the entire dance process, from learning the steps in scenes filmed in Central Park and the South Street Seaport, to practicing the routines with professionals in New York lofts, and concluding with a full-scale production on stage.

Marcia Rock is a writer, independent producer and professor at the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, where she serves as the director of the News and Documentary program. Her other credits include Dancing with My Father, Writers' Rooms: The Making of a Mural and Daughters of the Troubles: Belfast Stories. Surrender Tango first debuted in 2006. It was highlighted at the New York Tango Festival and the Milan Documentary Festival with critical acclaim.

Surrender Tango will re-encore on Monday, July 26 at 9:30pm. Watch Surrender Tango online after it airs on the NYC Media Video On Demand Player: www.nyc.gov/vod.
