SummerStage Announces Upcoming Shows: Jason Mraz, Trombone Shorty, Porches, TOKiMONSTA, and More!

On Sunday, August 5, three diverse up-and-comers will showcase the stylings of contemporary Brazilian music. BaianaSystem, the dub and Bahian guitar innovators who are a central part of Brazil's Carnival circuit, have brought millions of people into the streets with their singular sound. They're joined by the bandolim guru Hamilton de Holanda and his trio, who will perform along with the Latin Grammy nominated artist Roberta Sá, as well as the forward-thinking rhythms of the one and only Xenia França. This free show will take place in Central Park from 3 to 7 PM. Doors open at 2 PM. A pre-show panel and Q&A: The New Cultural Shift: Music, Resistance and Social Change will take place at 1 PM. On Wednesday, August 8, legendary bandleader, singer-songwriter, and horn-blower extraordinaire Trombone Shorty will lead a night of jazz performances from the city's finest that will honor the musical traditions of New Orleans. With his band Orleans Avenue, Trombone Shorty has become well-known for his unique brass band blare that incorporates deep-groove funk, the blues, and hip-hop. Joining him will be preeminent jam-band Galactic, who brought their R&B infused brand of jazz-funk onto the scene in the early '90s. Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who has been around for over 50 years, will also perform. Building on the second-line brass band tradition, the younger, nine-piece New Breed Brass Band will bring their contemporary twist, incorporating funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop elements to the show. Also joining the celebration are New Orleans legends Cyril Neville of the Meters and The Neville Brothers, blues singer and guitarist Walter "Wolfman" Washington, and jazz trumpeter and composer Kermit Ruffins. Tickets to this show are $45. The show will take place in Central Park from 6 to 10 PM. Doors open at 5 PM.

On Thursday, August 9, California born-and-bred singer-songwriters Jason Mraz and Brett Dennen will team up to bring their upbeat, folk-pop sounds and "Good Vibes" to Central Park. Since breaking onto the scene with his 2002 single "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)", off his debut album, Mraz has released five chart-topping studio albums, won two Grammy Awards, and nabbed the ASCAP Song of the Year award for his 2010 hit "I'm Yours". Guitarist Brett Dennen has released six acclaimed studio albums and his songs have been featured on a number of television show, from Parenthood to About A Boy. His latest single "Already Gone" debuted in January 2018. Tickets to this show are $55. The show will take place from 7 to 10 PM. Doors open at 6 PM.

Also on Thursday, August 9, a special 35th Anniversary Reunion of Charlie Ahearn's Wild Style will take place in East River Park. The evocative film culminates with an infamous, real-life 1982 concert that took place at the East River Amphitheater, in which the likes of Rammelzee, The Fantastic Five, and Treacherous Three, performed. 35 years later, the stars of the film invite special guest DJ Funk Flex to celebrate with them in the very same place. Special guests include: Almighty Kay Gee, Busy Bee, Charlie Ahearn, DJ Grand Wizzard Theodore, DJ Tony Crush, Eclipse, EZ AD, Grand Master Caz, Patti Astor, and Rodney C. This free event will take place from 6 to 10 PM. A pre-show hip-hop dance workshop with Fabel will take place at 6 PM.

On Friday, August 10, Peridance Contemporary Dance Company (PCDC) will make their SummerStage debut. Known for Artistic Director Igal Perry's timelessly elegant and brilliantly musical choreography, PCDC has an illustrious performance history at venues including The Joyce Theater, the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center, and internationally in Italy, Israel, South Korea, and Bulgaria. This free performance will take place from 7 to 9 PM. Alvin Ailey's Revelations Celebration Community Workshop will take place at 7 PM.

On Saturday, August 11, Jennifer Lee, better known by her alias TOKiMONSTA, will perform a free show in Central Park. A producer and label owner, she has been an instrumental part of building the West Coast's reputation as a beat-making cultural destination. She's joined by Korean-Californian rapper Dumbfoundead and producer DJ Kero One for a performance in association with the Korean Cultural Center New York and MeanRed. This free show will take place from 6 to 10 PM. Doors open at 5 PM.

Also on Saturday, August 11, Porches, the winsome solo project of Aaron Maine, will perform a free show in East River Park in association with Brooklyn Magazine. New York DIY band Sunflower Bean will bring their young dream-pop musings. Psychedelic rock experimentalists Crumb will round out the evening of heavy grooves and heady moods. This free show will take place from 5 to 7 PM.
