Submissions are now being accepted for the third annual Corkscrew Theater Festival, which will take place July 10 - August 4, 2019, at the Paradise Factory (64 East 4th Street, Manhattan). This summer theater festival is a curated presentation of new work that provides early-career artists with a high level of production support and features four world premieres and four readings performed in repertory over four weeks. Corkscrew seeks projects that demonstrate real collaboration, especially if they are being created through innovative or nontraditional partnerships or models.
The festival aims to be particularly supportive to early career artists: there are no fees for applying or participating in the festival, each production will receive at least 16 hours of tech time, and shows will have a full hour to install their sets prior to each performance. Corkscrew offers hands-on support from selection to the final curtain, including casting assistance, design roundtables, a weekly Writers' Group, a developmental reading in springtime for each of the four productions, and regular face-to-face meetings with festival staff. The festival's mission highlights its desire to "promote interaction and dialogue among artists and to build a community around a season of theater."
Corkscrew is not limited in genre, content, or theme - all kinds of theater are welcome. Important criteria for selection include passion, a unique perspective, a key collaborative relationship (i.e. actor/director, composer/lyricist, writer/designer, sisters/co-creators, anything!), and a desire for further development leading up to production.
The deadline for submissions is November 23, 2018 at 11:59pm EST. A complete application consists of:
1. A draft of the script (if not 100% complete, please describe the full scope of the project)
2. Lead artist bios
3. One or more work samples (photos, audio, or video)
4. Five short answers accessible on the application form
All performances as part of the Corkscrew Theater Festival will take place at the Paradise Factory (64 East 4th Street, Manhattan).
