The Blue Note welcomes Spyro Gyra back for a week of shows for the first time since 2009. As the band celebrates 35 years since its first release and looks forward to celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, it shows little sign of slowing down, gaining Grammy nominations for each of its last four albums.
During its career, the band has performed over five thousand shows, released 29 albums and sold over 10 million albums, while also achieving one platinum and two gold releases. Originally inspired by Weather Report and Return to Forever’s rotating casts of top players and extended jams, the band’s personnel has settled over the years to feature the members that will be at the Blue Note this week: Jay Beckenstein (sax), Julio Fernandez(guitar), Scott Ambush (electric bass), Tom Schuman (keys), Bonny Bonaparte (drums). Spyro Gyra’s latest release on Amherst Records, A Foreign Affair (2011) shows the group still developing after all these years, with special guests Keb’ Mo’ and Pedrito Martinez.
