Spring 2018 Music Events Announced At Scandinavia House  Image

This spring, Scandinavia House presents musical performances ranging from classical to modern chamber music to pop and world music, with artists ranging from emerging new Scandinavian voices to renowned performers.

Our calendar includes multimedia performing arts events such as Kalevala: The Musical, in concert by Johanna Telander on March 5, which brings a Finnish national legend to life through new music, as well as the collaboration Quiescence with Anna Fríða Jónsdóttir, Abraham Brody, and Ásta María Kjartansdóttir on April 5, which interprets the silence of Iceland through an expressive audiovisual work.
Other highlights this spring include the unique sound and style of New Tide Orquestra on April 7, a Swedish group fronted by Per Störby Jutbring that combines modern chamber music with minimalism and hints of tango. Award-winning Norwegian string quartet Quartetto Testosterone joins us April 17 for a performance of Edvard Grieg's string quartets. Trio Vitruvi, an ensemble including Niklas Walentin, Alexander McKenzie, and Jacob la Cour, perform works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Dvo?ák on April 26. On May 15, Juho Pohjonen, a leading concert pianist from Finland, joins us for a series of classical works.

Swedish pianist Per Tengstrand returns to continue his popular Music on Park Avenue series and conclude his performances of "The Complete Beethoven Sonatas," with performances of the artist's "unplayable" sonata The Hammarklavier on March 22, as well as Beethoven's final three sonatas on March 29: Op. 109, 110, and 111. On April 19, he'll be joined by a string quartet from Opus Twentyone Chamber Group for performances of Mozart and Brahms.

Internationally acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Siegel also returns for his ongoing Keyboard Conversations series, with performances accompanied by informal commentary on music and composers as well as a Q&A. On March 1 he'll be performing The Exotic Music of the Night with works by Sibelius, Palmgren, Mendelssohn, and others. On May 10, he'll be performing Bach and Chopin: A Musical Kinship.

All concerts at Scandinavia House are held in Victor Borge Hall, named in honor of the legendary Danish entertainer, in recognition of his devotion to Scandinavian culture and his generosity to Scandinavia House. For a full schedule, visit scandinaviahouse.org.

kalevala: the musical with johanna telander

In celebration of Kalevala Day, the day of Finnish culture, join us as composer Johanna Telander brings the beloved Finnish epic Kalevala to life. Telander will retell this well-known story of ancient legends through a pop, folk, and world music score.

Quiescence

A collaboration between visual artist Anna Fríða Jónsdóttir, musician and artist Abraham Brody, and cellist Ásta María Kjartansdóttir, Quiescence interprets the quest for the silence native to Iceland through an expressive audiovisual work.

Sweden's New Tide Orquestra, fronted by composer Per Störby Jutbring, bring their unique sound and style to NYC with a mix of modern chamber music, minimalism, improvisation, and hints of new tango.

Edvard Grieg's string quartets with Quartetto testosterone

Award-winning Norwegian string quartet Quartetto Testosterone presents Edvard Grieg's quartets: the grand and celebrated quartet in G minor, and the lighter, unfinished quartet in F major.

This spring, Swedish pianist Per Tengstrand returns to Scandinavia House for the Music on Park Avenue concert series and concludes his performances of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas in The Complete Beethoven Sonatas on March 22 & 29.

The longest, most difficult of Beethoven's piano sonatas, Beethoven nevertheless considered The Hammarklavier his best.

Farewell To The Piano: The Last Sonatas-The complete beethoven sonatas-march 29
Tengstrand performs Beethoven's last three sonatas: Op. 109, 110 and 111.

Mozart and Brahms-with the Opus Twentyone chamber group-april 19
Joining Per Tengstrand are a string quartet from Opus Twentyone, a group of musicians from Princeton University including Hana Mundiya and Soyeong Park on violin, Noah Pacis on viola, and Leland Ko on cello.

Internationally acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Siegel continues his popular Keyboard Conversations series. Each evening comprises an informal commentary on the music and its composers, a full performance of each work, and a short Q&A session.

Jeffrey Siegel performs works about beauty and mystery of nighttime: Valse Triste by Sibelius, May Night by Palmgren,
A Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn, Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns, and Nights of Late Summer by Stenhammar.

Bach and Chopin-A Musical Kinship-may 10
Bach was Chopin's favorite composer. Siegel brings the two together with performances of Bach's Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue and Gigue, and Chopin's Polonaise Fantasie and mazurkas.
