Spiegelworld, the creative Production Company behind the hit Las Vegas show Absinthe, reverses the tradition of testing new shows out-of-town before bringing them to Broadway. Spiegelworld continues to use New York City as its development laboratory before productions are sent out to Las Vegas and the rest of the world.
This summer, Spiegelworld is fanning the sparks of a brand new show at a mystery New York City location. We Are Here will plunge audiences into the hedonistic world of disco, which erupted out of 1970s New York. This new show will experiment with the use of music, video, movement and storytelling within an exciting, high-energy performance environment. The creative team includes acclaimed director Steven Hoggett with music curated by legendary record producer, songwriter and musician Nile Rodgers of Chic fame.
Following an intensive four week developmental period, We Are Here will play a public showcase season at The GlitterLoft on East 3rd Street from July 31 to August 4. The production is then planning to take up residency in Las Vegas in 2019, joining Spiegelworld's other two hits on the Strip, Absinthe at Caesars Palace and Opium at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
Spiegelworld's Impresario Extraodinaire Ross Mollison said today, "We love creating shows in New York City. There is nothing like testing and refining new material and fresh ideas in front of a New York audience who are open to new experiences and are brutally honest. We have spent many months developing this show with Steven Hoggett and we are all so excited to be working closely with Nile Rodgers who practically invented disco. The songs he crafted including Good Times, Le Freak, Everybody Dance and We Are Family were the anthems of this city and are now the heartbeat of our show along with many other hits from then and now. "
Before Absinthe became a smash hit in Las Vegas (now in its eighth year performing two shows every single night of the year), Spiegelworld developed the raunchy comedy acrobatic show over three summers in its spiegeltent on Pier 17 at the Old Fulton Fish Markets. In 2012, Spiegelworld premiered its New York inspired acrobatic show, Empire, in its spiegeltent on a vacant block off of Times Square before it went on a three year sold-out tour around Australia, Japan, USA and Canada. In 2017, Spiegelworld staged a development workshop and performance of an innovative new physical theatre work, Heroes, at St Ann's Warehouse. The previous year, the company ran a series of test audience performances of its ever-evolving eccentric comedy Vegas Nocturne at The House of Yes in Bushwick.
"We Are Here is unlike anything we have ever done before," Ross Mollison said. "We have always wanted to do a show about disco which we believe Las Vegas visitors will love, and what better place to create the show than in New York City where the disco movement was born in mind-blowing clubs like Studio 54? The show will probably be different every night during its run and we are really looking forward to getting feedback from the audiences."
New York City 1970s. Behind the velvet rope, people of every race, class and sexual identity come together, encouraged to wear whatever they want, kiss whoever they want and, of course, dance however they want. We Are Here highlights the music bedrock of disco's iconic tracks to explore the rise of a popular movement, and the stunning backlash against it. Forget white suits and mirror balls, this is a celebration of the beat that set the world on fire and continues to unify generations and cultures at a time when we need it more than ever.
The creative team includes acclaimed director Steven Hoggett (Harry Potter and The Cursed Child (Movement, West End / Broadway); (What's It All About? Bacharach Reimagined (Director, New York / West End); The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Choreography, Broadway) Once (Movement, Broadway) with music curation and additional ideas by legendary record producer, songwriter and musician Nile Rodgers (Chic).
We Are Here is written by Olivier Award-winner Michael Wynne (The Priory) with lighting design by Olivier Award-winner Natasha Chivers (Sunday in the Park with George), and sound design by Olivier Award-winner Tom Gibbons.
