Spend The NYC Public School Lunar New Year Holiday & Midwinter Recess At The Staten Island Children's Museum!  ImageThe Staten Island Children's Museum has a fun-filled week of activities planned during the NYC Public School Lunar New Year Holiday and Midwinter Recess, Friday, February 16 - Sunday, February 25. The Museum will be open daily on those days, from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

During the week, the Museum will continue its celebration of Black History Month with special programs and events.

First up are the ShopRite Kidz Cook sessions on Friday, February 16, which is the NYC Public School Lunar New Year Holiday. Young chefs will learn how crops from Africa are included in the Creole style of cooking found in New Orleans. Sessions are at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 pm on both Fridays, February 16 and 23.

The Weekend Art Studio will show children how to create concentric circles of color inspired by the works of African-American expressionist painter Alma Thomas. The Studio is open on Saturdays and Sundays, February 17 - 18 and 24 - 25 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

Monday, February 19 is a Cool School Holiday, with FREE admission all day, made possible by the Staten Island Children's Museum Trustees.

On that day, the Staten Island Sandy Ground Historical Society will share a presentation on the Underground Railroad, with sessions at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 & 4:00 pm. Timed tickets are available at the front desk; each session is limited to 25 attendees.

The Museum will also celebrate the Winter Olympics with art activities and skills workshops!

Children will make a Winter Olympics Medal in the Art Workshop from Monday, February 19 - Thursday, February 22 between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. Be sure to pick up a timed ticket at the front desk.

From Tuesday, February 20 - Thursday, February 22, children will learn and practice the skills needed to be an Olympian like Lolo Jones, Vonetta Flowers, Shani Davis and Debi Thomas. Sessions on those days are at 2:30 & 3:30 p.m.

Join Staten Island's own Rev. Olga Robinson and learn about Praise Dance, which is commonly performed at Afro-Caribbean houses of worship. Sessions are on Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 & 3:00 pm.

On Sunday, February 25, celebrate the Year of the Dog with the New York Chinese Cultural Center and a performance at 2:00 pm, followed by paper-cutting workshops at 3:00 & 3:30 pm. Pick up a timed ticket at the front desk; workshops are limited to 25 people per session.

Please note that the Museum's regular programming - Tot's Time, Clay and Paint Programs - are suspended during the Midwinter Recess week and will resume during the week of February 26.
