Spencer Throckmorton and Norberto Rivera Will Discuss Miguel Covarrubias' Works and Mexican Influence On The Harlem Renaissance Image

Curator and radio host Savona Bailey-McClain will talk with gallerist Spencer Throckmorton and Norberto Rivera on the friendships that Miguel Covarrubias developed with such Harlem luminaries as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Ethel Waters and WC Handy. Covarrubias was enthralled with the Harlem scenes and created many caricatures of common people or for books and magazine.

Young Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias appeared on the New York art scene in the 1920s, and his skill as a portrait artist and celebrity caricaturist quickly made him a favorite of magazines. His work was so vogue, in fact, that he would be published regularly in Vanity Fair beginning early in his New York experience, as well as the New Yorker, and the most vogue publication of them all-if in name only-Vogue.

On Saturday, February 16th at 3 pm, guests will be able to view the exhibition and see not only the works that Covarrubias created in Harlem but his modern studies in Bali at Throckmorton Fine Arts Gallery. Located at 145 East 57th Street, New York, NY 10022 on the 3rd floor. This is a FREE event.
