The one-woman show, Platform Griot, features spirited anecdotes interwoven with soulful songs as a brazen homeless woman solicits money on a New York City subway. Numerous characters are portrayed by the award winning playwright and actor, Baindu D. Kalokoh. The director is Pharah Jean-Philippe.
Performances are on August 1, 2017 (6:30pm); August 5, 2017 (6:00pm) and August 6, 2017 (4:45pm) at The WorkShop Theatre's Jewel Box Theatre, 312 West 36th Street, New York, NY 10018. Tickets are $20 and are available at The Workshop Theatre's box office and www.TheRealBaindu.com.
Platform Griot is humorous, yet impactful. The stories highlighted in the play serve as a testament to the power of hope, love and a willingness to laugh at life in spite of the circumstances. Baindu states, "I want the audience to fall in love with my character, Michelle, the same way I did when creating her."
The play is a part of the Midtown International Theatre Festival, New York City's oldest consecutively run theatre festival.
Baindu, a native Brooklynite, enjoys using various mediums of the performing arts to conduct storytelling. Her full length play, Tenneh, was "A-listed" for the Garland Lee Thompson, Sr. Readers' Theatre at the 2017 National Black Theatre Festival and featured in the DC Black Theatre Festival 2017 New Works Reading Series. She was a finalist in Theatre at Downtown Urban Arts Festival 2017. Baindu has performed internationally and is thrilled to perform Platform Griot in New York City.
