Sophia Amoruso, Beauty and the Beer, and Art History Happy Hour part of October 2016 Public Programs

The Brooklyn Museum will present a variety of programs for adults, teens, and kids in October. Public programs include talks, performances, and hands-on workshops for children and adults that amplify the Museum's exhibitions and permanent collection, serve its diverse public, and support learning through the visual arts.
Highlights include the opening of the special exhibition Beverly Buchanan --- Ruins and Rituals on October 21; a conversation with Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal; a screening of Beauty and the Beer; an Art History Happy Hour inspired by Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present; and a conversation with Lowery Stokes Sims on Beverly Buchanan.

October 2, 3:30-5 pm Creativity Lab Meet in the Education Studios, 1st Floor $10 for up to four participants; $5 for Family Members; free to Friend Members and for Cool Culture families. Tickets include Museum admission. In this new monthly drop-in studio workshop, take inspiration from our galleries, experiment with materials, and learn artistic techniques. All ages are welcome.
Thursday, October 6, 7 pm Film and Tasting: Beauty and the Beer Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor Free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace Beauty and the Beer (Anne Newman, 2016, 75 min.) chronicles one of the most successful American marketing campaigns of the mid-twentieth century: the wildly popular Miss Rheingold Beauty Contest of 1941-64, in which people voted for their favorite young woman to represent Rheingold beer. The film features former Miss Rheingolds, advertising executives who worked on the campaign, and fans of the contest. The screening is followed by a talkback with the director and with novelist Wally Lamb, a collector of Miss Rheingold memorabilia and author of She's Come Undone. Throughout the night, The Norm Restaurant and Michelin-starred Chef Saul Bolton presents "Burgers and Brew," pairing craft beers with the Norman Burger. For reservations, visit www.thenormbkm.com.
Thursday, October 13, 6-10 pm Salsa Party Martha and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion, 1st Floor Free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace Join a salsa lesson class led by professional dancers, followed by live music and dance performances by some of Brooklyn's best Latin dance teams.
Thursday, October 18, 7 pm Film: Moonlight Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium RSVP required. Free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace Catch the highly anticipated new feature Moonlight (Barry Jenkins, 2016, 110 min.), before it premieres. Moonlight tells the story of a young man's struggle to find himself as he falls in love while grappling with his sexuality. The screening is followed by a conversation about portraying queerness and masculinity with the director and black queer artists represented in our collection. Thursday, October 20, 7 pm In Conversation: Sophia Amoruso Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor Free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal and writer of the New York Times bestseller #GIRLBOSS, shares how she went from dumpster diving to founding one of the fastest-growing retailers in the world. Join Amoruso as she talks about her new book, NASTY GALAXY, and her #GIRLBOSS Foundation, which empowers the next generation of female entrepreneurs within the creative community.
Saturday, October 22, 9-11 am Art of Yoga Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor Tickets are $10 to $20 and include Museum admission. The Brooklyn Museum and Flavorpill present a yoga class taught by renowned teachers from around the country. Saturday October 22, 2 pm Curator Tour and Screening: Beverly Buchanan --- Ruins and Rituals Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, 4th Floor Free with Museum admission Join the curators of Beverly Buchanan--- Ruins and Rituals for a lively conversation about the exhibition. Curator and writer Jennifer Burris and artist Park McArthur discuss in depth their encounters with Buchanan's work, the development of the exhibition, and the importance of reviving Buchanan's practice for new audiences at the Brooklyn Museum. At 3 pm, Burris and McArthur screen previously unseen footage of Buchanan's earthworks as they exist today, discussing the relationship between Buchanan's art and the places in Georgia and Florida where she worked.
Sunday, October 23, 2 pm Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor Tickets include Museum admission. Visit www.brooklynsymphonyorchestra.org/ for prices. Enjoy the music of Rossini, Bartok, and Beethoven. The performance opens with Rossini's Semiramide, continues with Bartok's Viola Concerto, played by soloist Hsin-Yun Huang, and concludes with Beethoven's Seventh Symphony.
Thursday, October 27, 7 pm Art History Happy Hour Martha and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion, 1st Floor Art History Happy Hour is free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace. Admission to Who Shot Sports is $10 on Thursday Nights. The Society for the Advancement of Social Studies (SASS) and Brooklyn Brainery present an evening of sports trivia and art history from ancient Greece to the 2016 Summer Olympics in celebration of our special exhibition Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present. Join a pop-up talk in the exhibition at 6:30 pm. Accompanied by a cash bar.
Thursday, October 27, 7 pm Hidden in Plain Site: Beverly Buchanan--- Ruins and Rituals Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor Free as part of Thursday Nights hosted by Squarespace Curator Lowery Stokes Sims reflects on her early relationship with Beverly Buchanan in a conversation with voices of a younger generation inspired by Buchanan's work.
