On December 27th, rap artist, writer, and theater performer Baba Brinkman will return to the SoHo Playhouse to reprise three of his best-loved shows, Rap Guide to Evolution, Rap Guide to Climate Chaos, and Rap Guide to Consciousness. Brinkman, who has been nominated for two Drama Desk awards and whose work has been described as "astonishing and brilliant" by The New York Times, is excited to bring these productions back to the stage.
2019 marks ten years since the premiere of Rap Guide to Evolution, in which Baba boldly chose to use the language of hip-hop to take theatergoers on a tour of modern evolutionary biology in an effort to make sense of the implications of Darwinism. Peer-reviewed by microbiologist Dr. Mark Pallen, the show became a runaway success, and was perhaps the first show to be praised by both Scientific American (who called it "Interesting, intelligent and funny...The NWA of DNA") and Time Out New York (who gave it four stars, calling it "totally original and thought-provoking").
Since then, Brinkman has been wowing audiences tackling science and philosophy's most challenging questions in a mix of one-man theater and hip-hop concert. In doing so, he has become a mainstay in off-Broadway theater along with the Blue Man Group and Stomp, earning cosigns along the way from popular scholars like Neil DeGrasse Tyson, David Chalmers, Deepak Chopra, and Bill Nye.
SoHo Playhouse's Artistic Director, Darren Lee Cole is delighted to have these shows back for their Winter season. "All this year while Consciousness was running, audience members would tell me 'Amazing, we love it! It's just too bad we missed his other rap guides..." Cole, who directed Brinkman's rap guides to Religion, Climate Chaos, and Consciousness, says he hopes to make the series an ongoing feature at the SoHo Playhouse. "After the success of Hannah Gadsby's Nanette and with the upcoming run of Fleabag, we're all about disruptive, provocative work here at the Playhouse. I just hope we can add Religion to the rap guide series as well in 2019!"
