Heather Maloney's LP Making Me Break is out now on Signature Sounds Recordings. The album, produced by Bill Reynolds (Band of Horses, Avett Brothers), premiered at Consequence of Sound. Maloney is currently on tour, including newly added dates in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. See below for full routing.
Most recently, Maloney has been named an April "Artist to Watch" at SPIN and the video for lead single "Otherwise" premiered at Diffuser. In addition, the new video for "Day With You" can be streamed here:http://bit.ly/1CuJRlu. Elmore praises the footage, saying, "In this intimate, in-studio footage, the simple, understated instrumentation allows Maloney's tremendous instrument to shine in its remarkable range, as she hits both piercing high notes and deep, low tones with grace and ease."
Of the recording process, Reynolds says, "I knew that I wanted to make it fresh and go for new sounds that I hadn't done on other records." Maloney further explains her writing process, adding "The sounds I love in indie rock are so lush, and textured, and intricate, like someone spent a lot of time on this, so they must really care...as a singer-songwriter raised on folk, I am drawn to lyrics that that are meaningful, intelligent, tell a story, paint pictures... that care. So I just wanted to make an album that cared musically and lyrically. Some sort of a bleeding heart meeting a distant, unaffected, sparkly rock band." The album was recorded at Reynolds' historic studio in Nashville. In 2014, Maloney successfully raised over $30,000 via Kickstarter to help fund the recording.
Heather Maloney's path to becoming a songwriter is an unusual one. A classically trained vocalist, Maloney has studied opera, improvisational jazz, and music theory in addition to a brief stint studying classic Indian vocals. She has performed alongside
Shakey Graves and opened for
Lake Street Dive and Rodrigo y Gabriela. She is based in Northampton, MA.
Maloney only began writing her own music after living in a silent mediation retreat for three years and credits the experience to her evolution as a singer-songwriter, explaining, "The biggest motivating factor in writing was probably the experiences that I was having here in my meditation practice...There was the difficulty of it, the suffering of it, and wanting to channel that into something creative, and on the positive side, the insights that came out of my experiences." Making Me Break is her second record on
Signature Sounds.
