About 'Broadway Inspirational Voices':
'Broadway Inspirational Voices', founded in December of 1999, is a gospel ensemble comprised of actors performing on and off Broadway. Founder Michael McElroy originally organized his choir in 1994, as the New York Theatre Community was being devastated by the AIDS epidemic. He comments: "There was a pervasive sadness and a lack of anywhere to find solace during this time. Gospel Music has always held a special place in my life. It has a power like no other kind of music and is capable of touching deep to release the sorrow, pain, joy and love one feels inside. This music has sustained me and many others who are open to its beautiful message. In 1993, I extended an invitation to 11 fellow performers to join me in an evening of Gospel Music to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. We brought Gospel Music to our community. The response was overwhelming. People were touched, encouraged, and found the strength to keep going. Many listened to Gospel Music for the first time. That was 10 years ago. In this time the choir has grown from 11 to 65, and we perform for church concerts as well as sold-out evenings at theatres in New York City." The choir has also performed on "The Rosie O'Donnell Christmas Special," the "Broadway Sings Elton John" Benefit for Broadway Cares, the opening night party for Jesus Christ Superstar, The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation Benefit, the "Tony Awards 2000" and OpSail 2000 at a July 4th concert event for President and Mrs. Clinton.
About Sh-k-Boom Records:
Sh-k-Boom Records has earned critical acclaim in the three years since its launch. From Billboard Magazine to The New York Times Arts and Leisure section, from USA Today to The Los Angeles Times, the label has been consistently noted for its CD releases, concert series and efforts to bridge the gap between the perception and the reality of what modern Broadway performers have to offer. With the success of The Who's Tommy, Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp's Movin' Out and the runaway hit Rent, the classic image of Broadway musicals has been turned upside-down. Now, a visit to 'the theatre' can feel more like a rock concert. What's happening today is not your Grandma's Broadway musical, and Sh-K-Boom understands that. In many ways, as label President Kurt Deutsch has said, these musicians are working as hard as contemporary pop and rock stars on major tours. Eight shows a week, live vocals (no lip-synching to music videos for these singers!) and complex choreography put this current breed of Broadway performer in a new category. It's a different kind of Broadway, and Deutsch's label aims to help it become accessible and more accurately perceived. As an independent record label and entertainment production company that speaks to a new generation of musical theatre audiences, SKB produces, promotes and distributes solo recordings and original cast albums and produces live concerts and theatrical pieces. Their efforts have been met with positive results thus far, but Deutsch feels there's more work to be done.
