The New York Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra have announced a four-year extension of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Partnership, through the summer of 2022. The Philharmonic will perform an annual China tour - including appearances at Shanghai's Music in the Summer Air (MISA) festival, Guangzhou's Xinghai Concert Hall, and Nanjing's Jiangsu Centre for the Performing Arts - and Philharmonic musicians will teach at the Shanghai Orchestra Academy (SOA), established in 2014 through the partnership, four times each season, including in the summer.

In addition, SOA students may be selected by audition to travel to New York City to participate in the New York Philharmonic Zarin Mehta Fellowship Program, a week-long immersion in the life of an orchestral musician. More details about the summer 2019 China tour will be announced at a later date. Starr International Foundation continues as the Presenting Sponsor of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Partnership.

Launched in September 2014, the Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Partnership is a joint endeavor of the New York Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. The partnership began with the establishment of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy in partnership with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and under the leadership of founding president Long Yu. This two-year post-graduate program was designed to address the need for advanced orchestral training in China.

Highlights of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Partnership have included New York Philharmonic performances at Shanghai's MISA festival; Philharmonic musicians giving master classes, teaching lessons, providing chamber music coaching, and rehearsing and performing side-by-side with SOA students; Very Young Composers workshops and performances; Young People's Concerts; and a free outdoor concert by the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass Quintet.
