In the wake of last season's updated revival, a new production of Julius Caesar will unveil itself this summer.  Directed and designed by ShakespeareNYC's artistic director, Beverly Bullock, Julius Caesar will be presented at The Lion Theatre, part of the Theatre Row Studios, located at 410 West 42nd Street, beginning August 7th and running through August 20th.

Set in Rome in 44 B.C., the historical tragedy recounts the murder of the title character by the conniving Cassius and the well-intentioned by malleable Brutus.  This production is set in the "American South of the 1930s, with Caesar portrayed as a Huey Long-like demagogue, accompanied by a pack of men ready to strong-arm anyone who stands in his way.  But even these supporters are unprepared for what eventually happens. The cast will perform the Shakespeare text in 1930's costumes and corresponding set," according to production notes.

Featured in the cast of Julius Caesar will be Geoffrey Dawe* (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night at ShakespeareNYC) as Brutus, John Montague as Caesar and Marcus Dean Fuller* ("Guiding Light") as Marc Anthony.  The rest of the cast features Shari Paige Acker, C. Daniel Barr*, Wayne Preston Chambers, Corey Cicci, Eric Conley*, Susanna Harris, Peter Herrick*, Gretchen Howe, Douglas Clark Johnson, Matt Mercer*, Jeff Riebe*, Ellen Seltz*, Lillian Small, Nicholas Stannard*, Jared Waltzer and Melon Wedick.  The play is an Equity Showcase.

"ShakespeareNYC is a new theatre company dedicated to performing the plays of William Shakespeare...Their mission is to pursue clarity and wit, and devote themselves to the timelessness of Shakespeare's moral vision. Julius Caeasar concludes ShakespeareNYC's inaugural season which also consisted of Twelfth Night, and the double bill of The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Upcoming productions for ShakespeareNYC include Romeo & Juliet (in October, 2005) and King John and Richard II in early 2006.

Show times are Wednesday-Friday at 8pm, and Saturday at 2pm & 8pm. There will also be performances on Sunday, August 7th at 6:30pm and Tuesday, August 16th at 9pm.  There will be a talkback with some of the show's cast and production team following the performance on Thursday, August 18th.
