A Warming up for the Brooklyn Book Festival
Making Books Sing
In 1929, New York's first Puerto Rican librarian, Pura Belpré, transforms her East Harlem library into a welcoming community center for all, through a blend of storytelling, music and puppetry, young audiences will learn about Puerto Rican folklore and the library's important role in the community. Kids sing along and become puppeteers as Pura's stories unfold.

Bookmaking 101

Lincoln Center presents...Newgrass / Bluegrass
Bluegrass band Astrograss, from New York presents their take on Bluegrass in a new era in New York. Traditional and new works featured on guitar, violin, banjo, bass, and vocals. This show will have everyone tapping their feet and clapping their hands. Absolutely entertaining for any age, this group won the Time Out New York Kids Battle of the Bands in recent years, and is a staple of the grown-up bluegrass circuit, including the South by Southwest festival! They even turn popular hip-hop music from today into catchy bluegrass tunes that find audiences singing along!

Drawn in Brooklyn • curated by John Bemelmans Marciano
Brooklyn Public Library presents a festival and exhibition of children's book art curated by John Bemelmans Marciano and featuring the work of over 30 illustrators who live and work in Brooklyn, from the most exciting newcomers in publishing to the legends of the business.
The exhibition showcases over a hundred pieces of art from such books as Duck for President, the Curious Garden, Moonshot, and Madeline and the Cats of Rome, and includes such Caldecott and Coretta Scott King award winners as Leo and Diane Dillon, Brian Selznick, Paul O. Zelinsky, Bryan Collier, Pat Cummings, and Brian Pinkney.
The original picture book art of 34 illustrators is featured in the Grand Lobby. In the Youth Wing, the artists reveal the process behind their work with sketches, models, tools and more.
