This season of perfect weather brings out the best in all of us, and it certainly brings out the vibrancy that the Sedona arts scene has to offer. While many note Sedona scenic red rocks vistas they don't realize that this small town of 12,000 is renown as an arts destination.
Sedona's unique natural beauty has always attracted both internationally renowned artists and those who are just beginning to develop their artistic voice. From 1931 when two well-known sculptors, Robert and Mary Kittredge whose work still graces Arizona Government buildings, moved to Sedona captivated by the town's beauty to surrealist painter and sculptor Max Ernst, a pioneer of the Dada movement, who was drawn to the red canyons and spires Sedona quickly became an artists' hub, where creative people flocked to learn and work together in a naturally inspiring environment. By 1961 Joe Beeler, a pioneer in the field of Contemporary Western Art, made his home in Sedona and 1965 at the Oak Creek Tavern in Uptown Sedona, he, along with Charlie Dye, John Hampton, Frank McCarthy and George Phippen founded the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America.
Today, with an arts scene that has continued to thrive, Sedona has grown into a world class Arts Destination. They have been in American Style Magazine's top 10 small town destinations for the past 6 years and Travelnerd.com just recognized them as a top ten small town arts destination in May.
