With major support from Con Edison, the Staten Island Children's Museum's family programs are focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math; STEAM, in fun, hands-on and creative ways. Second Saturday Science, a one hour museum drop-in activity for the whole family, focuses on scientific exploration which engages children minds and imaginations.

This fall, Second Saturday Science will be held from noon to 1:00 pm:

  • October 14, create volcanic eruptions
  • November 11, design tiny terrariums
  • December 9, explore the mysteries of magnets

Con Edison, a longtime community partner generously sponsors Second Saturday Science as well as the Museum's STEAM "pop-up" programs, scheduled and unscheduled exhibit-based activities which may include engineering, building structures or creating circuits.

"Con Edison is a strong supporter of education and welcomes programs like Second Saturday Science at the Children's Museum. Engaging in STEAM related programs helps participants expand their awareness which will lead to possible careers in these important fields," said Katia Gordon, Con Edison's director of Staten Island and regional community affairs.

"The Children's Museum thanks Con Edison as well as other supporters of our STEAM programs. Their generosity has enabled us to purchase materials and products used in our STEAM programming, including Rig-a-Majigs, giant wooden erector sets and Imagination Playground's oversized and colorful building blocks and components which help children develop problem solving skills and encourage creativity in building," Dina Rosenthal, the Museum's executive director.

STEAM learning and fun is apparent throughout the Museum's every day programming. Science Time offers exploration of its living collection (bugs, fish, bees and more) as well as discussions about habitats, biomes, engineering, and electricity. STEAM Camp offered this summer was filled to capacity with eager learners, and our school programs include Science Immersion workshops focused on simple circuits.
