Scoundrels, Hair, Spamalot, Piazza and Spelling Bee Albums Nominated for Grammys

Cast recordings of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Hair, The Light in the Piazza, Monty Python's Spamalot and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee were nominated as Best Musical Show Album in the 48th Annual Grammy Awards.

The Grammys were announced today, December 8th, by The Recording Academy at Gotham Hall in New York City;the event was attended by national and international media, as well as key music industry executives. Artists reading nominations this morning included Natasha Bedingfield, Big & Rich, Mariah Carey, Chad Kroeger (Nickelback), Patti LaBelle, John Legend, Carly Simon, Sway, and CeCe Winans. The 48th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8 – 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

With the exception of Ghostlight Records' Hair, which was a preservation of the Actors' Fund of America benefit concert, all of the cast recordings represent Broadway shows. The Light in the Piazza, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee were all 2005 Tony Award nominees for Best Musical, while Monty Python's Spamalot won the honor.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' cast recording, produced by Bill Straus and David Yazbek, was released by Ghostlight Records; Yazbek penned the show's music and lyrics. Hair, with music by Galt MacDermot and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, was produced for Ghostlight by Kurt Deutsch and Joel Moss. Ghostlight (with Razor & Tie) was also the label of the cast recording of Spelling Bee, which features a score by William Finn. Deutsch and Moss also produced the cast album.

The Light in the Piazza's original cast recording was produced on the Nonesuch label by Steven Epstein; the show features a Tony Award-winning score by Adam Guettel. Monty Python's Spamalot, produced for Decca Broadway by John Du Prez and Eric Idle, boasts music by Du Prez and Idle, and lyrics by Idle.

In other categories, Mariah Carey, John Legend and Kanye West topped the nominations with eight each, while 50 Cent, Beyoncé Knowles, The Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am, and Stevie Wonder garnered six a piece. Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Gwen Stefani and U2 received five nods each, while Common, Destiny's Child, Foo Fighters, Gorillaz, Neptunes, Brad Paisley, Phil Tan, and Gretchen Wilson each earned four.
