School of Visual Arts Presents Several Exhibits for August

The School of Visual Arts has several continuous art exhibitions for the month of August. These exhibitions will be held at the four galleries around town. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. The Visual Arts Gallery and the Westside Gallery will be closed from Friday, September 3 at 1 p.m. through Monday, September 6 for the Labor Day Weekend.

The SVA Gallery on 601 West 26 Street, 15th floor, will be hosting the "That's Just It", "Serial Intentions", "Camera Work", and "The Slow Motion Show" exhibits from now until August 14. "That's Just It" is an exhibition of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and mixed-media work by recent graduates of the MFA Fine Arts Department. Curated by faculty member Stephen Maine. "Serial Intentions" is an exhibition of sculpture and installation by students and recent graduates that examines the boundaries between representation and abstraction. Curated by Richard Brooks. "Camera Work" is an exhibition of film and photography by current students exploring portraiture, social commentary and organic abstraction. Curated by Richard Brooks. "The Slow Motion Show" is an exhibition of drawing, video, collage and interactive performance art by recent graduates interpreting slow motion as a device used to reveal the unnoticed. Curated by Richard Brooks.

The School of Visual Arts Gallery will also be hosting the "Where's My Vote? Posters for the Green Movement in Iran" exhibition, from August 30 through September 25. This exhibition features over 125 political posters by graphic artists world wide, created in support of the protests in Iran that followed the 2009 presidential election. The exhibition is the first public viewing of these posters in printed form and was organized by designers Anita Kunz and Woody Pirtle, along with Francis Di Tommaso, director of the Visual Arts Gallery, and Steven Heller, author, design historian and co-chair of the MFA Design Department at SVA. A reception will be held on Thursday, September 16 from 6-8 p.m.

The Westside Gallery on 133-141 West 21 Street will be hosting the "Abstract Intentions" exhibit from August 7 through the 21st. It is an exhibition work by former participants in the Summer Residency Programs in the Division of Continuing Education at SVA. Curated by David Gibson, faculty member, and Keren Moscovitch, coordinator of the Summer Residency Programs. There will be a reception held on Saturday, August 7, from 5-8 p.m.

The Westside Gallery will also be hosting the "Valetudo: Art and Healing in Provence" exhibit, featuring works made by psychiatric patients at the Maison de Sante Saint-Paul in the French town of Saint-Remy-de-Provence. Saint-Paul is known by art historians the world over as the hospital where Vincent Van Gogh committed himself in the late 19th century, and the place where he made some of his most recognized works. With a selection of recent paintings and testimonials from present-day Saint-Paul patients, the exhibition documents the enduring role that creative expression plays in the healing process of artists and non-artists alike. Presented by the MPS Art Therapy Department, in partnership with the Valetudo Association. A reception will be held on Monday, September 13, from 6-8 p.m.

The School will also be hosting a lecture by Gene Liebel on Friday, August 6, from noon until 1 p.m. As partner and executive director of research and user experience at HUGE, Gene Liebel oversees user research, product strategy, interactive marketing, interaction design and analytics disciplines. He is responsible for the development of successful user experiences for clients such as IKEA, JetBlue, About.com, Pepsi, Electrolux and HBO. Liebel's product designs have won numerous industry honors including an International ANDY Award, Communications Arts' Interactive Media Award and several AdTech Prizes. Presented by the MFA Interaction Design Department.

SVA will be hosting their summer residency open studios on Thursday, August 5, from 6-9 p.m., where participants of the July session of the summer residency program will share their work with the public. The painting and mixed media works can be found at the Westside Gallery, 4th Floor. Printmaking and book arts can be found at the Westside Gallery, 9th floor.
