Friedrich Schiller's Mary Stuart opens at The Pearl Theatre Company on Sunday, April 30th and runs through Sunday, May 21st. Joanne Camp (recently seen in "Hecuba") and Carol Schultz (recently seen in "Measure for Measure") star and Eleanor Holdridge (The Imaginary Invalid) directs.
Mary Stuart dramatizes the enthralling clash of two rival royals, Mary Queen of Scots and her politically-ambitious cousin, Elizabeth I of England, during a scandal-ridden, world-changing period of England's history. With faith dramatically pitted against politics and womanhood poised with statesmanship, Schiller's account of Elizabeth's struggle over executing Mary or sparing her life is propelled forward through conspiracies, suicides, jealousies, explosive confrontations and suspense.
Schiller's universally acclaimed masterpiece (written in 1801) has been performed for over 200 years and was recently staged on London's West End. Friedrich Schiller, whose "Ode to Joy" was most famously set to music in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, is renowned not just as a dramatist and poet but as a foremost German philosopher and historian.
The Pearl Theatre Company's production of Mary Stuart is a New York premiere of Michael Feingold's translation, which has received critical acclaim in Boston and San Francisco. Five of Mr. Feingold's translations have received world premieres at The Pearl: The Venetian Twins, When Ladies Battle, The Barber of Seville, Mirandolina and A Will of His Own.
