Recording artist and Broadway performer Sasha Allen (Hair) will perform the song "Huddled Masses" from the upcoming new musical LIBERTY at the reopening of the Statue of Liberty crown, which was closed after the 9/11 attacks, on Saturday, July 4, 2009. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. on NYC's Liberty Island with the performance taking place at 9:40 a.m. The City Lights Youth Theatre will perform "Huddled Masses" and "Horizon" on Liberty Island at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Produced by Theresa Wozunk, LIBERTY: A New Musical of Monumental Proportions features a book and lyrics by Dana Leslie Goldstein and music by Jonathan Goldstein. Currently preparing for a legitimate run in 2010, LIBERTY tells the story of America's most famous immigrant who arrives from France in 1884 amid anti-foreigner fervor. With powerful political forces working against her and only a precious few on her side, Liberty ultimately wins over the people of the United States and takes her rightful place on the pedestal. LIBERTY serves as a theatrical reminder not only of what this country was meant to become, but how we have, in recent years, lost sight of the "Golden Door."
Sasha Allen can currently be seen as Dionne in the Broadway revival of HAIR: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical. Allen has performed on world tours and on platinum albums with Grammy Award-winning artists including Leona Lewis, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Usher, John Legend and Babyface. She is featured on Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics DVD, John Legend's Once Again and Babyface's Playlist.
Allen starred in the cult film, Camp and is releasing her debut solo album on her own Ladybug&Darling Music label, a collaborative venture with producer and arranger Rob Lewis. Her new single "It's All For You" will be released at the end of July and her hit single "What if God Was One of Us" is currently available on iTunes.
A full concert presentation of LIBERTY will take place on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at The Acorn Theatre (Theatre Row, 410 W 42nd Street) at 8 p.m.
