The Sheen Center for Thought and Culture is thrilled to celebrate the release of rapidly rising New York City poet Sarah Kay's newest book, The Type, with a night of poetry and surprise guests on Friday, March 4 at 7:30pm in the Sheen's Loreto Theater. In a rare hometown show, Kay will perform new poems and old favorites, including "The Type," the poem that "explores the promise and complicated reality of being a woman" and which will now be available in a beautiful illustrated hardcover from Hachette Books. After the show, copies of The Type will be available for purchase and signing.

Sarah Kay has been performing her spoken word poetry since she was fourteen years old. She was a featured poet on HBO's "Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry Jam" in 2006, and that year she was also the youngest poet to compete in the National Poetry Slam. She is perhaps best known for her talk at the 2011 TED Conference, which garnered two standing ovations and is one of the Top 25 most viewed Ted Talks of all time with over eight million views. Sarah holds a Masters Degree in The Art of Teaching from Brown University, and an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Grinnell College. Her first book, "B" was ranked #1 Poetry Book on Amazon. Her newest book, "No Matter the Wreckage," published by Write Bloody Publishing, is also an Amazon Bestseller in American Poetry. Other poems and articles have been published in CURA Magazine, The Writer Magazine, Thrush, Treehouse Magazine, Union Station Magazine, The Huffington Post, CNN.com, and many more. Sarah is a passionate educator who has lead professional development workshops and been a featured presenter at education conferences such as the IBO, NAIS, ECIS, and AISA. Sarah, who has garnered a large social media following on twitter with over 25k followers, is the founder of Project VOICE, an organization that brings spoken word poetry to schools and communities around the world.

Tickets are $25 and $15 for Students & Veterans and available at SheenCenter.org. The Sheen Center is located at 18 Bleecker Street.
