Actress and writer Sarah Elizabeth Grace is shedding it all in her new show "Mental Nudity". A one-night only event tonight, July 30th at the People's Improv Theater, Ms. Grace showcases the fears, tears, and fun of growing up in this hour-long extravaganza.
"Mental Nudity" is moving to Manhattan after a successful world-premiere at Williamsburg's Standard ToyKraft venue on April 20th. Audience members called it "inspirational" and "hilarious," and were impressed with Ms. Grace's seamless navigation through delicate subjects. A Brooklyn resident and a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Ms. Grace decided to take on the roles of writer and producer in addition to performer after having an epiphany. "I was tired of waiting around for my next juicy role. So I decided writing a show in which I bare it all - in the emotional sense, of course - would do the trick." explained Ms. Grace.
Using hand puppets, a ukulele, and a couple of old diaries, Ms. Grace explores the good, the bad, and the ugly that comes with growing up. The show's humor and pathos are coupled with Grace's vulnerability and pizzazz. Rounding out the cast of "Mental Nudity" is Grace's partner, Joe Hennes, on ukulele. "It's all a labor of love," says Ms. Grace. "We want to make public the stories, fears, and hopes we usually save for sleepovers and therapy. That's our idea of fun!"
"Mental Nudity" is written and performed by Sarah Elizabeth Grace and directed by Katie Lee Hill. The show will take place at 8 pm tonight, July 30th at the PIT Underground Theater (123 E. 24th St, New York, NY). Tickets are $5 at the door.
