According to The Hollywood Reporter, talks between Sony Studios and Sandra Bullock, the actress who was recently offered the role of orphanage meanie 'Miss Hannigan' in the upcoming musical adaptation of Annie, have ended.
As BWW reported last week, the actress and the studio recently resumed casting negotiations which had abruptly fallen apart in March. Will Smith and Jay-Z will produce the project starring Academy Award nominee Quvenzhane Wallis in the title role.
A search is now underway to find an actress to take on the leading role in the musical scheduled to be released in 2014.
Will Gluck is directing the forthcoming major motion picture remake of the beloved Charles Strouse/Thomas Meehan/Martin Charnin stage musical classic Annie from a revised script by Emma Thompson and Aline Brosh McKenna. The film is aiming to begin production in late fall 2013.
The Tony Award-winning stage musical Annie has previously been filmed twice, the first time in 1982 with John Huston in the director's chair and later in a made-for-TV adaptation produced by Disney and helmed by CHICAGO director Rob Marshall in 1999. Annie is currently playing on Broadway in a James Lapine-directed revival starring Lilla Crawford, Jane Lynch and Anthony Warlow.
