Dottie Hope, Laurie Sanderson's one-woman autobiographical show about her days as a model and a friend of Andy Warhol, will return to the Cherry Lane Studio (38 Commerce Street) for 3 more performances only from July 20th to 22nd at 7 PM. Directed by Courtney Munch, Dottie Hope
is Sanderson's "riveting true story of hope and survival in Hells Kitchen
in the 1970's and 80's," state production notes. "Dottie Hope is the pen name Laurie adopts when she
is 5 years old and writes letters to God asking for help and guidance in her
tumultuous life. When her pool shark father, her hero, spirals down into
an alcoholic and pill-popping haze it turns the family upside down, leaving a
little girl few outlets for sanctuary. When she discovers the glamour of
Studio 54 she is easily seduced into the chaos, befriending Andy Warhol and
eventually becoming the first Fiorucci girl at 16 years old. She finally
develops her own identity and builds confidence while cleansing herself from
past demons…until it all suddenly comes back to her again."
Dottie
Hope was developed with Wynn Handman in his professional acting class. It
has also had readings at Irish Arts Center and the Greenwich Street
Theater. Sound design is by Bart Fassbinder with lighting by Ian Grunes.
Sanderson, a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, is a New York stage veteran who
was featured in Burt Reynolds's trilogy Hostage Hotel. She has performed at such venues as the 78th Street Theatre
Lab, Greenwich St. Theatre, The Actors Studio, Irish Arts Center, Stella Adler
Studios, and Playwrights Horizons, to name a few.
Munch has directed multiple
productions by another solo performer Jonny McGovern, with shows at such venues
as Caroline's, PS 122, Surf Reality as well as Extreme Girl by Barabara
Blackburn at the Culture Project.
