To celebrate the release of her new CD Valentine (Bayview Recordings), Tony Award-nominee Sally Mayes will take the spotlight at Birdland (315 W. 44th St.) on Monday, August 22nd at 7 PM.
Presented by Jim Caruso in association with TheaterMania, the evening will be part of the The New Season, a series of concerts at Birdland featuring top Broadway performers."For the first time in her recording career, Sally Mayes has turned her
attention to a very special group of standards and has come up with a
stylish and beautiful jazz-tinged album…her personal valentine to the
great American songbook," as a press article describes it. "Songs by Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington,
Harry Warren, James Van Huesen, Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh sit
comfortably beside those of newer composers, Kenny Rankin, Stanley
Turrentine and Amanda McBroom. In her first Birdland appearance, Ms.
Mayes will perform 'I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good),' 'Here's That
Rainy Day,' and the classic 'Angel Eyes.'" Mayes (who the New York Times has called "a singer of incandescent ebullience, deliciously saucy"), currently stands by for Delta Burke and Christine Ebersole in the soon-to-close Steel Magnolias. She received a 1994 nomination for her performance as Ilona in She Loves Me , and other New York appearances include Welcome To The Club, Closer Than Ever, Das Barbeque, Pete N' Keely, and Urban Cowboy. Mayes portrayed Mae West in the mational tour of Dirty Blonde, and albums include Boys and Girls Like You and Me, The Story Hour and Sally Mayes--The Dorothy Fields Songbook.
