STELLA BY STARLIGHT Gala Honors Elaine Stritch, Stephen Sondheim, George Takei and Charles Cohen Tonight

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting has announced that the Eighth Annual Stella by Starlight Benefit Gala will be held tonight, June 10 at Espace in New York City. This year's honorees include acting luminaries Elaine Stritch and George Takei, Broadway idol Stephen Sondheim and real estate mogul Charles S. Cohen. The gala will feature a special live performance from Ms. Stritch's friend Bernadette Peters and red carpet appearances by Alec Baldwin, Liza Minnelli and James Gandolfini. Additional red carpet guests include gala co-hosts and Stella Adler alums JANE LEVY (Evil Dead, Suburgatory) and Keith Powell (30 Rock).

The evening will be a special celebration of Emmy and Tony Award Winner Elaine Stritch. Ms. Stritch, who recently announced that she is leaving New York after 71 years as a star of Broadway, television and film, will be inducted as an Honorary Chair of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting.

Broadway legend and Tony, Grammy, Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award Winner Stephen Sondheim will receive the "Marlon Brando Award" for a life committed to social activism and excellence in art. Cultural iconGeorge Takei will receive "The Harold Clurman Spirit Award" and patron of the arts Charles S. Cohen will receive "The Stella Adler Corporate Award."

Funds raised from the evening will be used to support the studio's programs such as the Stella Adler Outreach Division, a program that provides free actor training to low-income, inner-city youth. The Outreach Division has served and trained nearly 5,000 students since its inception in 2004.

"Stella by Starlight allows us to pay tribute to great theater makers like Elaine Stritch and Stephen Sondheim, but perhaps more importantly, it helps us to raise funds for programs like the Outreach Division," Artistic Director of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, Tom Oppenheim, stated today. "Through the generosity of the extended community, Stella by Starlight makes it possible for young people to receive an education that brings them in touch with their most authentic selves."

Over the years, the Stella by Starlight Gala has honored some of the most distinguished artists in the entertainment and media industries. They have included James Earl Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, Harry Belafonte, Liz Smith, Warren Beatty, Liza Minelli, Martin Sheen, Annette Bening, Harold Bloom, Tony Kushner, Elaine Stritch, Sidney Lumet, Ruby Dee, the late Ozzie Davis and the late Roy Scheider, as well as other key entertainment, theatrical and business leaders.

Since 1949, The Stella Adler Studio of Acting has been the premier actor training program in New York City and around the country. The studio has trained thousands of actors and artists, including the likes of Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Elaine Stritch, Benicio del Toro, Alvin Ailey, and Salma Hayek. The studio encourages its students to be well-versed in not only theater, art, music and literature, but also to be involved in social, humanitarian and community-related issues.

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting is an acting school based in New York City founded by actress and teacher Stella Adler in 1949. Adler founded the Studio on her belief in the seriousness of her art. Adler and the school have trained many of the brilliant actors of our time, including Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, and Elaine Stritch. The Stella Adler Studio of Acting is a nonprofit organization, which trains over 500 actors annually. Each year the Stella Adler Outreach Division provides free theater programs to hundreds of young people who live below the poverty line and has reached nearly 5,000 youth since 2004.
