Carrie Compere, currently appearing in the hit Broadway revival of The Color Purple, returned to her hometown of Trenton, NJ last week, where she was honored by Trenton Young Scholars Institute. A slew of local politicians turned out in her celebration, including the town's mayor and a state Senator.
"You're an example to naysayers," Mayor Eric Jackson said of Compere. "Greatness comes out of the city of Trenton. We're proud to know you. We're proud you represent us."
Following her introduction, Compere performed a touching tribute to her late mother. You can watch her full performance below.
