Hello and welcome to BWW's ON THIS DAY Series! Please read along as, each day, we celebrate birthdays, shows' openings and all kinds of theatrical events that have happened on this date.
Today is the fictional birthday of Parisian waitress, Amélie Poulain, and director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Amélie captured hearts in Jeunet's 2001 film, which was nominated for five Academy awards.
In 2017, a new musical of the same title will be coming to a confirmed Broadway location, directed by Tony Award winner Pam Mackinnon (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Clybourne Park), with a book by three-time Tony Award nominee Craig Lucas (An American in Paris), music by Daniel Messé (Hem), lyrics by Nathan Tysen (Tuck Everlasting) and Daniel Messé, and musical staging and choreography by Sam Pinkleton.
To celebrate the pair's birthday, here's the upcoming Broadway production's trailer.
