Hello and welcome to BWW's ON THIS DAY Series! Please read along as, each day, we celebrate birthdays, shows' openings and all kinds of theatrical events that have happened on this date.
Today is the birthday of Paula Leggett Chase, a woman who exemplifies the possibilities for an all-singing and all-dancing Broadway actress to take to the screen.
Leggett Chase has a prolific musical theatre career – in fact, soon she can be seen in “Mama Mia” at Century II Concert Hall in downtown Wichita, KS (the production runs August 10-14 and 19-21). Her list of classic Broadway musical credits is impressive: she was in “A Chorus Line”, “Crazy for You”, “Damn Yankees”, “Kiss Me Kate”, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, “The Pajama Game”, “Curtains”, “Bye Bye Birdie” AND “On the Twentieth Century”. She was also in “The Sound of Music Live”.
She’s also performed in some of TV’s most popular comedies, including a recurring cameo in Tina Fey’s “30 Rock” for NBC, and has most recently been in AMC’s “Feed the Beast”, alongside David Schwimmer.
Let’s celebrate Paula’s birthday with something a little less dramatic, though. Here she is singing Cole Porter’s ‘Take Me Back to Manhattan”.
