Last Thursday, November 6th, it was announced that Café Edison in Times Square has been denied a new lease by The Hotel Edison management. The diner, which has served as a hub for the Broadway community for more than 30 years, is expected to close at the end of the year. The story has sparked an outpouring of support, including a song from former BWW contributor Melanie Bowditch to the tune of LES MISERABLES' "Do You Hear the People Sing". Check it out below!
MELANIE'S LYRICS:
SAVE THE EDISON CAFE,
IT IS A STAPLE OF BROADWAY,
WITH A RICH HISTORY, IT'S CLEAR, FROM THE SIGNED POSTERS ON DISPLAY.
THEATRE'S BEST COLLABORATE,
HOMEMADE BLINTZES ON THEIR PLATE,
IF ITS DOORS CLOSE, NEW YORK WILL BE LEFT IN QUITE A STATE.
WILL WE BE LEFT WITH JUST APPLEBEES AND OTHER STANDARD CHAINS?
CAN DECISIONS BE MADE BASED ON MORE THAN JUST FINANCIAL GAINS?
AS ALL THAT'S UNIQUE DISAPPEARS, NOTHING HEARTFELT REMAINS!
SAVE THE EDISON CAFE,
IT IS A STAPLE OF BROADWAY,
CROWDED WITH PATRONS EATING BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER EVERY DAY.
NOT A TOURIST TRAP AT ALL,
HOME OF THE GREATEST MATZO BALL,
IF ITS DOORS CLOSE, A TREASURE'S LOST, DON'T LET THIS BEFALL!
SAVE THE EDISON CAFE,
IT IS A STAPLE OF BROADWAY,
PLEASE MAKE IT KNOWN THAT IT SHOULD REMAIN OPEN, WE MUST HAVE OUR SAY.
FOLKS ARE SURE TO BE IRATE,
IF IT SHOULD MEET THIS AWFUL FATE.
DON'T SHUT IT DOWN, ITS PRESENCE IN NEW YORK'S MUCH TOO GREAT.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE!
