In the debut episode of BBC America's new miniseries STATE OF PLAY, a political suicide starts the media guessing. When Sonia Baker, a young political researcher, falls on the London Underground tracks and is killed, her high-profile boss Labor Member of Parliament Stephen Collins, is devastated. The press smells blood and questions are asked about the nature of his relationship with Sonia. The story is pursued by a leading newspaper, and Senior Reporter Cal McCaffrey, is put on the case-his long-standing friendship with Collins considered a bonus by the editor, Cameron Foster. McCaffrey is uncomfortable with pursuing what amounts to a domestic scandal, until his colleague Della discovers a surprising link between Sonia's death and the murder of a black teenager named Kelvin Stagg that same morning. Someone clearly wanted Sonia dead. But why?
STATE OF PLAY is a roller-coaster thriller of deception and collusion in the corridors of power. Written by Paul Abbott ("Shameless") and directed by David Yates ("Harry Potter"), the miniseries stars Bill Nighy ("Love Actually"), John Simm ("Life on Mars"), David Morrissey ("South Riding"), James McAvoy ("X-Men: First Class") and Kelly Macdonald ("Boardwalk Empire").
A dynamic combination of murder, suspicion, deceit and intrigue, "State of Play" examines the tumultuous world of respected journalist Cal McCaffrey (Simm) and his sarcastic newspaper editor Cameron Foster (Nighy) as they attempt to unearth the connection that two unrelated murders have with a prominent, yet deceptive politician (Morrissey). Revelation upon revelation pile up in the aftermath of these two seemingly unconnected events, ultimately bringing to light shady dealings between the government and major corporate powers. Friendship are tested and lives are put on the line as an intricate web of lies unfolds.
STATE OF PLAY follows the cinematic crime thriller, "Whitechapel," and airs Wednesdays at 10/9c.
