Erivo trained at London's RADA. Cynthia's breakout performance was in the West End production of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,followed by the starring role in Jerry Zaks' UK tour of Sister Act. Cynthia played Chenice in Simon Cowell and Harry Hill's I Can't Sing and the title role of Dessa in Dessa Rose. Other credits: Simon Stephens' Marine Parade, John Adams' I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, Dominic Hill's The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain, Phyllida Lloyd's acclaimed Henry IV (Donmar) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (Liverpool Everyman Theatre). TV credits include Canal Plus' "The Tunnel," ITV's "Mr. Selfridge" and E4's "Chewing Gum." Cynthia received an Evening Standard Theatre Award nomination for Best Musical Performance and a WhatsOnStage Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Celie in the Menier Chocolate Factory's 2013 production of The Color Purple. Broadway debut, for which she won Tony and Drama Desk Awards as well as Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards.
