STAGE TUBE: Colony Documentary, MANHATTAN LULLABY Trailer Released

As BroadwayWorld reported last week, Colony Music in Times Square will be closing next month after 60 years serving the New York theatre community. Filmmaker Sara Cross is currently in the midst of creating a documentary about the store, and you can check out a trailer for the film below!

Cross writes: "I started shooting Manhattan Lullaby in fall of 2008, filming the store's 60th anniversary celebration during those first weeks. I never knew what would happen, how long they would survive, when they would be swallowed up by the encroaching juggernaut of corporatization and homogenization that has transformed our cultural identity. It was not a question of if, more a question of when. The when has come. The store will be closing its doors for the last time this fall, 4 years after the 60th anniversary and 4 years after I started shooting. As one of the long time employees said to me, 'This is it. We're the last record store. They're all gone.' Soon, Colony will be gone too. This is the end of an era."

Colony was originally opened by Harold S. Grossbardt and Sidney Turk in 1948. It boasts one of the largest sheet music collections in the United States. Now, the store sells Broadway CDs, karaoke albums, production DVDs and more. The storefront was first at Broadway and 52nd Street, but moved to 1619 Broadway in 1970, which is located inside the Brill Building.
