On this morning's TODAY show on NBC, David Gregory interviewed Dennis Devern, the man who captained the yacht the night that actress Natalie Wood mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Davern confessed to Gregory that he had lied to investigators about the details of that night and blamed Wood's husband, actor Robert Wagner, for failing to act efficiently in searching for his wife the night she drowned.
As a result of Davern's latest admittance, homicide detectives have agreed to re-open the case that has always created many more questions than answers. What is known is that Wood drowned after a night of drinking off the coast of California's Catalina Island with her husband and friend Christopher Walken.
Davern admitted to Gregory that he regretted not being completely truthful to investigators 30 years ago. He believes that Wagner intentionally deterred investigators from doing a proper search for his wife. Last year, he released a new account of what took place which he co-authored with Marti Rull. The book is titled, "Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour,". 'Splendour' refers to the name of the yacht the couple sailed on that fateful night.
