'SPEECH AND DEBATE' PLAYS AT WAGNER COLLEGE NOV. 11-21 When "Speech and Debate" opened Off Broadway at the Roundabout Underground Theatre in 2007, it launched the career of a young, ambitious Brown graduate and playwright named Stephen Karam.

"Speech and Debate," a wickedly dark comedy with an edge, demonstrates Karam's clear understanding of American youth culture.

The story follows three angsty teenagers: Diwata, the uber-ordinary girl; Howie, the sensitive nerd, and Solomon, the proudly out-of-the-closest homosexual. When they become the center of a sex scandal that rocks their little hometown of Salem, Oregon, the three set out to uncover and expose the truth - at least, as they understand it. Karam's most notable accomplishment is the fiercely funny script that is almost too true to the mannerisms and lingo of contemporary youth. "Speech and Debate" tackles the age-old issues surrounding the difficult transition a teen entering into adulthood.
Wagner College is proud to welcome back John Saunders, fresh off the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" tour, to direct this production. The play's cast includes: Justin Scalzo (Howie), Michael Garomini (Solomon), Ashley Burger (Diwata) and Lissa Bak (Teacher/Reporter).

"Speech and Debate" opens Wednesday, Nov. 11. It plays Nov. 11-14 (Wednesday through Saturday), and again Nov. 18-21. Showtime will 8 p.m. for all performances except Wednesday, Nov. 18, when showtimes will be 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Reservations can be made at the Wagner College Box Office, 718-390-3259. The Box Office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
