The Decca Broadway release of the original Broadway cast recording of MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT, Broadway's Tony Award winning Best Musical, has sold over 100,000 copies since the album's release in May making it one of the fastest selling cast recordings of the past decade.
If all of those albums had been sold in Finland, the cast recording would have achieved triple platinum status according to the standards set by IFPI, the Finnish recording industry association.
Directed by Mike Nichols, SPAMALOT stars David Hyde Pierce, Tim Curry and Hank Azaria, with book by Eric Idle, and music and lyrics by John Du Prez and Eric Idle.
Produced by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, the recording features such classics as "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life"and "Knights of the Round Table," as well as many new songs written for Broadway including "The Song That Goes Like This," performed by the show-stopping Tony Award winner Sara Ramirez and Christopher Sieber, "His Name Is Lancelot," "He is Not Dead Yet," I'm All Alone," and "You Won't Succeed On Broadway."
In addition to the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, SPAMALOT also received the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, and the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Musical. SPAMALOT also received the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical (Mike Nichols) and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Sara Ramirez).
SPAMALOT features a book and lyrics by Eric Idle, music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle, direction by Mike Nichols, choreography by Casey Nicholaw and is based on the screenplay of Monty Python and the Holy Grail by Monty Python creators Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, with an entirely new score with two songs from the 1975 film.
