Producers Whoopi Goldberg and Stage Entertainment have announced that the Broadway musical SISTER ACT will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, August 26, 2012, prior to kicking off a North American tour on October 2 at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre. Upon closing after a 16-month run, the Broadway production will have played 28 previews and 561 performances at the Broadway Theatre (1681 Broadway).
"To hear people laugh and cheer the way they do at SISTER ACT -- a show people think they know but are pleasantly surprised to discover is not what they were expecting -- is a magical experience for a producer," says Producer Whoopi Goldberg. "Happily, audiences across the country will be able to get in on the fun this fall when Deloris and her fabulous sisters start spreading the love nationwide."
"I couldn't be more proud of the creative team and cast members that have made SISTER ACT such a critically-acclaimed and crowd-pleasing success on Broadway," said Stage Entertainment U.S. CEO Bill Taylor. "Our New York audiences have been absolutely amazing and I look forward to this fall's tour and the next chapter in SISTER ACT's wonderfully successful life."
SISTER ACT had its world premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse in the fall of 2006, followed by a production at Atlanta's ALLIANCE THEATRE in the winter of 2007. The West End production began previews at London's Palladium Theatre on May 7, 2009 and concluded its run there on October 30, 2010. The Broadway production began preview performances on March 24, 2011 and officially opened on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Broadway Theatre.
