SHIRLEY GNOME: REAL MATURE will play FRIGID New York from February 18 - March 8, 2015.
In August of 2012, Vancouver-based songstress Shirley Gnome scored a surprise win with "Patrick Maliha's The People's Champ of Comedy Competition." Along with the $20,000 grand prize, the title launched her from a local fringe burlesque and comedy performer to an international touring artist.
Gnome's music, while both provocative and racy, is contrasted by the beauty and depth of her vocal abilities. You won't hear such filthy and honest notions sung in a more enchanting way than when Gnome unleashes her voice.
With lyrics like hers, you might see why. In the delightfully vulgar track Hipster Vagina, Gnome sings about how her own genitalia might be a trend-setting scenester. "It thinks that mainstream porn is really kind of weird/I guess that would explain the bushy hipster beard."
But Gnome isn't afraid to go a little deeper. She explores the conundrum of having her breakfast paid for after a one-night stand, expressing her mixed feelings about the exchange in the lilting country ballad aptly named "Hooker".
Gnome performed a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013 - the world's largest arts celebration. She was nomination for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Variety Act in 2014, and garnered positive reviews for her fringe tour across Canada. Now making her debut in New York City, one might say that Gnome gets around - a most fitting double entendre.
The show will run at Under St. Marks Theatre (94 Saint Marks Place, New York, NY), Friday, February 20 (5:30 p.m.); Monday, February 23 (8:50); Thursday, February 26 (5:30); Saturday, Friday, February 28 (8:50); Tuesday, March 3 (5:30); Saturday, March 7 (10:30). **Mature Audiences Only** Tickets: $12.
