SCENERY launches brand new line of accessories created from retired show stages (stage decks). Many stage decks used for touring and on Broadway are made of a very strong laminate called EPG. This type of flooring withstands all kinds of heavy theatrical wear and tear like automation, dance, touring, but does not decompose well. Now, instead of going to the landfill, SCENERY has found a new way to recycle theatrical waste with their Show Deck Bangles collection that will launch on March 27, 2019.
All handbags and accessories are created from retired theatrical materials from Broadway, national tours, and regional productions from around the country. The shows may have closed, but it's possible to own your very own piece of theatre history with SCENERY.
After working as a stage manager for 17 years, Jennifer Kahn, (CEO and founder of SCENERY) had seen many backdrops thrown away, and in an effort to decrease theatrical waste and with the mission to make theatre accessible to everyone, SCENERY was born in 2017. A portion of the proceeds from all sales is donated to the Theatrical Development Fund (TDF) to take students to see a Broadway or Off-Broadway show. Not only do these bangle bracelets and handbags allow the closed shows to live on, they give a new generation a chance to experience meaningful live theatre.
All SCENERY bags and accessories are handmade in the USA and tagged to share what production the retired material is from and the number in the collection. Since 2017, SCENERY has collected 15,544 pounds of theatrical waste, sponsored 490 students to watch Broadway shows, and helped 26 shows find new life.
SCENERY accessories are a hit in the Broadway community, including celebrity clients and friends Krista Rodriguez, Rachel Bloom, Ashley Park, Donna Murphy, James Snyder, Alex Brightman, Courtney Reed, Kathryn Gallagher, and Donna Lynne Champlin. SCENERY launches the Show Deck Bangles collection this March.
