Roulette Kicks Off ICElab Free Series Tonight, Featuring Radical, Emerging Composers

Roulette, celebrating 35 years of experimental performance, presents ICElab in a three performance run December 3rd, 10th & 17th. ICElab - a showcase of radical new projects from emerging composers, commissioned, produced and performed by ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble) will feature works by Maria Stankova & Sasha Siem, Martin Hiendl & Monica Duncan and Daniel Dehaan & Felipe Lara. Maria Stankova & Sasha Siem
Stankova's piece for 6 players employs algorithms and large-scale, non-linear processes as a jumping off point for an experimentation with structure and multiple streams of perception. Siem's evening-length song cycle features her remarkable vocal talents integrated with delicate orchestrations featuring seven ICE musicians.

Tuesday, December 10, 8pm
Martin Hiendl & Monica Duncan
Hiendl and Duncan will present their ICElab 2013 commission, OFFSHORE, an ambitious piece for two percussionists, two trumpets, tuba, horn, electronics and vide. OFFSHORE deals with the visual and sonic patterns of nautical communications while in passage between land and water. This passage is a danger zone, a space of shallow water where ships barely skim the ocean floor and meticulously steer into port. This commission explores the peril that arises from our attempt to migrate between these two worlds.

Daniel Dehaan & Felipe Lara
Concluding the 2013 ICElab series is the exciting pairing of Daniel Dehaan & Felipe Lara. Dehann's project is a piece adapted for large indoor spaces where the audience's attention is diverted through lights and sound manipulations to small instrumental ensembles positioned throughout the space during the performance. Lara's piece, Trans (cribe) for ICE begins with the improvised gestures of the individual musicians and transforms them, through transcription and electronic manipulation, into a cohesive form and structure.

Roulette - one of New York City's premiere venues for experimental music for 35 years - has reopened bigger and better than ever. Located in a newly renovated 1920s Art Deco concert hall in Downtown Brooklyn, the new Roulettefeatures two levels of seating for up to 400 people (600 standing), an expanded multi-channel sound system, projection screen for film and multi-media events, state-of-the-art lighting system, modular stage, and a specially designed floor to accommodate dance. Teamed with bold new programming, the new Roulette promises to be one of the most exciting places in New York City - if not the country - to experience adventurous music and art.
