Rosie O'Donnell, who recently played Golde in the now-shuttered revival of Fiddler on the Roof, is developing a new series for the Logo Channel, the station that premiered in June and focuses on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender audiences.
Entitled "Simply Sketch," the show would live up to its name by featuring "a cast of up-and-comers, will be filmed in front of a live
audience with taped segments of musical numbers as well as commercial
and movie parodies incorporating political satire," according to an article in The Hollywood Reporter. The show, which is likely to premiere later this year, will also feature celebrity guest appearances and "friends of the LGBT community."
Former Disney executives Dan MacDonald and Joe Del Hierro approached O'Donnell with the idea for the show; the comedian/performer found it "fresh and hilariously creative." MacDonald and Del Hierro, who now head Oh Really! Productions, will serve as executive producers for "Simply Sketch," while former producers and writers from "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" will also be on board.
O'Donnell, who famously promoted Broadway shows on her talk show (which aired from 1996 to 2002), has previously appeared on Broadway in Seussical (as The Cat in the Hat) and in Grease. O'Donnell, who began her career as a stand-up comedian, also produced the Boy George musical Taboo, and film and TV credits include Tarzan, Harriet the Spy, Now and Then, Exit to Eden, A League of Their Own, Sleepless in Seattle, "Will & Grace," and "Queer as Folk." O'Donnell, who is a also known as a vocal advocate of gay and lesbian rights, is married to Kelli Carpenter O'Donnell, with whom she has four children.
